Lamborghini open to considering all-electric supercar: CEO

Lamborghini is open to an all-electric addition to its line-up of luxury sports cars, its chief executive said on Wednesday, evidence that German parent Volkswagen’s interest in producing zero-emission vehicles could extend to the very top end of its brands.

The 54-year-old Italian car firm is already deviating from its tradition of producing high-powered, low-slung sportscars with its new sport utility vehicle, called Urus, itself a variation in its bovine branding.

The SUV will be launched at the company’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, towards the end of this year, with deliveries starting in the second half of 2018.

“Electrification is an area of great attention for us, but I’m not expecting it will happen in the short term,” CEO Stefano Domenicali told Reuters at the Geneva car show, ruling out a purely battery-powered Lamborghini before 2025.

“We need to be realistic,” he said, pointing to the need to preserve the characteristics of a supercar in terms of handling, weight and performance even in an electric model, while at the same time considering its cost and the required investments.

Lamborghini, one of VW’s stable of superluxury brands along with Bentley and Bugatti, already plans to bring a plug-in hybrid version of the Urus SUV by 2020.

Separately, the CEO held out the prospect of another record year for Lamborghini in 2017, powered by undiminished demand for super-luxury cars in the United States, China and Europe.

The company was showing its new Huracan Performante in Geneva ahead of first deliveries in June, with the level of pre-orders already looking good, said Domenicali, the former head of Ferrari’s Formula One racing team.

“Since the financial crisis, the market for super sports cars has seen a constant recovery,” he said.

“For the medium term, I don´t see a change in that substantially positive trend, especially since economic regions like the U.S. and China are showing unchanged growth.”

Domenicali said he expected sales this year to increase by a single-digit percentage rate from last year’s record 3,457 deliveries.

Future shipments for sports cars would be capped at around 3,500 a year but could go slightly higher as the market expands to a maximum of 3,800, to safeguard the brand’s exclusivity, he added, although the Urus SUV could double overall production volumes.

“We will be prudent. Of course we will grow sustainably, but being in the luxury market we must not take every growth potential that is there,” he said.

Depending on demand the Urus could add at least another 3,500 vehicles to Lamborghini’s total output, he added.

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Maserati Levante gets the Startech treatment

Brabus sub brand rolls out cosmetic package for luxury SUV

A new range of Startech visual enhancements for the Maserati Levante are now being offered to buyers who may have felt the Italian SUV lacked presence.

Owned and operated by long-standing Mercedes-Benz tuning house Brabus, Startech markets parts and accessories for British prestige vehicles from the Bentley, Jaguar and Land Rover stables. The Levante represents a new chapter in the brand’s expansion strategy.

Riding on 21-inch alloy wheels shod with 265/40 ZR 21 tyres at the front and 295/35 R21 at the rear, the Startech-fettled Levante features added aero components designed using CAD technology and constructed in PUR RRIM (polyurethane reinforced reaction injected moulding). These comprise a front spoiler, rear wing, rear diffuser and ‘C-blades’ either side of the tailgate to “calm the airflow”. Buyers can opt for the aero kit to be constructed from carbon-fibre if they wish.

Accessories for the Levante’s interior comprise carbon-fibre trim for dashboard/centre console/door panels, plus scuff plates with backlit Startech logo and aluminium sports pedals and footrest.

At some point in the near future, Startech will introduce performance upgrades for the turbo-diesel V6 that powers the Levante in Australia, as well as the petrol V6 that’s not available in this market.

THE NEXT-GEN BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT TAKES A PAGE FROM PORSCHE

The way things look to be shaping up, changes to the Bentley Continental GT’s styling are going to be like changes to the Porsche 911: minor modifications to a firmly established formula. It seems Bentley customers like a certain style, and, as shown by the Bentayga SUV, Bentley is willing to twist that design into any shape. German influence from the parent company has apparently taken hold in Crewe.
The new model takes a lot of influence from the EXP10 Speed 6 concept that debuted nearly two years ago. The profile looks the same, but the new car appears more muscular than the current model, with sharp lines that carry from the fender through the doors. All of the requisite curves are present, just tightened up a little. Despite the camouflage, we can tell that the Continental GT will retain its four round lights up front, similar to the EXP10 Speed 6. The LED ring can be seen through the covering on the coupe, while the convertible has even less camo.
Out back, little has changed. The oval tail lights still match the exhaust tips, and the coupe’s fastback roofline still ends at the rear bumper. The trunk lid now sits flush with the rest of the bodywork, but other than that, there will be no mistaking this for anything other than a Bentley Continental GT. Likewise, changes to the Continental GTC convertible have been minor.
We don’t yet know when the car will debut or what will rest under the hood, but expect turbocharged eight- and twelve-cylinder power once again. Don’t rule out some form of electrification, given the new Bentley shares a platform with the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid.
