Reviewed: 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE

Get your leisure suit ready, because Disco is back! No, not the infernal audio craze of the 70’s, the rugged 4WD SUV from Land Rover. The Discovery is all new for 2017, and it shares nothing with its predecessors. Riding on the same chassis as the full size Range Rover and sport, the designers dropped a smaller body onto a proven foundation. We spent a week with a fully loaded example and made is forget discoveries of the past.

At first glance it is an appealing design. Since it rides on a full size chassis, there isn’t much overhang in front or behind the wheels. Not only does it make the Discovery appear larger, it allows it to be much more stable than its top-heavy ancestors. Our only gripe is the extreme forward rake of the C-pillar. It looks too much like every other midsize SUV. We also had the dynamic package which adds an aggressive body kit and 22″ wheels. It also replaces body color for dark accents and an ebony headliner. It will cost you $2,000 for the luxury and an additional $650 to black out the roof.

Driving the disco is a real treat. Starting at the top, the headrests are pillow soft with miles of adjustment. Shorter folks will also be happy that the infotainment screen is not as far away from the seats. The front interior is essentially a scaled-down Range Rover Sport with the same attention to fit & finish. Second row passengers have three seats that are perfect for three medium sized adults. Out back are two good sized seats that fold away on command. All surfaces are covered in Windsor leather in pleasing patterns.

Two sunroofs will brighten your day and ambient lighting rules the night. Because of the smaller size, the V8 engine won’t fit. The most potent offering is the 3.0 liter supercharged six shared across Jaguar and Land Rover and it makes 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Visibility is better than the full size models thanks to the sqared-off rear end. Unless you live in a gated community, the 22″ wheels are overkill. The ride quality is not on par with the Range series because the 22″ anchors are too heavy for cracked pavement.

Underneath is the venerable Terrain Respons 4WD system. With one of the only 2-speed transfer cases left in production, the differentials can be locked for a muddy or sand filled adventure. The offroad prowess is another reason to ditch the big wheels and keep a set of 20″ with all-terrain rubber. We kept it on the street, where acceleration could be better. You won’t win races but you will have seating for 7 and the ability to go anywhere. Of course, all the safety tech is included, and the lane keeping assist is on-point. The new Discovery HSE has a base price of $63,950 and a window sticker of $82,100. If you have been mulling a new Range, the Discovery is better in many ways and worth your consideration. Laird Hamilton and his wife were the first to receive theirs, and the photoshoot turned out better than our rain-soaked shots. Stay with us for all your Land Rover news.

How to Make Owning an Exotic Car Possible

For most people, buying luxury cars in Dubai is an elusive dream because of the huge expense that comes with it. Meanwhile, for others, purchasing their first or fifth iconic car is the peak of a life lived well. Whether you are purchasing your car for the first or hundredth time, you need a great gameplan to ensure that you will have the best car shopping experience.

Here are two of the most useful tips.

Know what you are getting into. – When it comes to anything, particularly in checking out luxury car brands, knowledge is always power. You need to know how current owners rate their experience, how hard it is to repair issues with the second hand car, and if there is a qualified workshop specializing in its service. By having this information ahead of time, you will be able to prevent remorse and better understand what you are willing to spend.

Set your budget – Apart from the purchase price, you also need to take into account factors such as maintenance and insurance. To save much in your purchase, take advantage of flexible finance options, as well as get insurance and warranty, shop for the best Dubai car dealers in town and second hand cars in Dubai.

To get your dream exotic car, it all boils down to one thing: make the right choices.

2018 Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic HSE

Have you noticed all the new Jaguar and Land Rover models at your local dealership? Probably not, because they are selling as fast as they arrive. The reasons behind the successes are quality and diversity of their lineup. Jaguar’s F-Pace has been their hottest product in recent history. In order to use its solid chassis as the foundation for a new Land Rover, Design Director Gerry McGovern penned the new 2018 Range Rover Velar.

In order to broaden the appeal of the Range Rover brand, the Velar was launched on the same assembly line as the F-Pace. we’ve covered it in detail, and the only difference in dimensions is on the front and rear bumpers. They are the only reason the Velar is 2.8″ longer than the F-Pace. The interior is a preview of the upcoming I-Pace, featuring 3 large touchscreens. Contrary to what you might believe, Florida can be dismal in Winter, so we chose to use stock photos of Ellie Goulding instead of soggy auto journalists.

New 2018 Range Rover Velar Prices and Specs Revealed

For those that ask “What’s in a name?”, branding the Velar as a RR instead of Land Rover allows the Discovery to carry the torch as a proper entry-level model. Under the hood is the same amazing supercharged 3.0 liter V6 found across the Jaguar/Land Rover portfolio. You won’t even notice it thanks to silent exhaust and liquid-filled motor mounts. It makes 380 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque in almost every situation. It is backed by ZF’s latest 8-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox is made in the US and shipped to the assembly plant in Solihull.

The Velar represents a new design language for the Range Rover brand. We’ve heard through the grapevine that the next generation of Range Sport will bear a shocking resemblance. Eventually, even the full-size range will follow suit.  Everything you could ask for is included with the HSE package. Climate control has no less than 4-zones, and the brilliant Meridian audio is rated at 825 watts. All the latest safety gear even includes traffic sign recognition. It reads the speed limits to remind you just how illegal your right foot can be. As you might imagine, a V6 in a 4WD SUV isn’t a recipe for economy, but 24 mpg is not shabby considering the other players in this segment.

Fit & finish are among the best in the industry. And the price you pay for all this starts at only $77,100. Not a bad deal for a quiet & composed crossover. We hope an electric version is in the works because the I-Pace is poised to corner the market. As always, stay with us for more Land Rover news & Reviews.

Continental introduces tyre range developed specifically for Middle East

Continental has become the first tyre manufacturer to develop a full range of tyres specifically promoted as being for the Middle East market. Officially launched in the GCC last week at a media event in the Dubai Autodrome, Continental’s new Generation 6 range of tyres are said to be designed “to cope with the unique road conditions found across the region.”

The Generation 6 range includes three distinct product lines, namely ComfortContact 6 for smaller cars and city driving, UltraContact 6 for larger sedans with a balance of comfort and performance, and MaxContact 6 for high-performance vehicles.

The new Generation 6 range is said to offer high resistance to damage from hazards such as potholes, debris and kerb impacts, helping to prolong the tyre’s life. Continental says they invested significant resources upon opening its Middle East office in 2014, commencing a detailed programme of research into the market. This was followed by a two-year development and production phase, which has resulted in the creation of 60 different tyre sizes across the three lines.

We tried out the different tyres in a three separate exercises, using a Ford Mustang V6 on a high-speed racetrack run, a VW Golf GTI on an autocross course, and an Audi A3 on a tyre-pressure safety demonstration. The cars performed admirably, with predictable and consistent handling even after a day of multiple runs by several drivers, although we were not in a position to specifically review the tyres with no reference to compare with.

We also did a brief trouble-free run at the Autodrome’s offroad course with a Toyota Land Cruiser. These 4x4s were fitted with General Tire products, Continental’s sister brand that makes a full range of passenger-car, offroad and commercial-vehicle tyres.

We were also shown Continental’s idea of a future wheel that can change width and tyre pressure at the press of a button, to adapt to different road conditions. It’s a unique idea, although Continental says the carmakers have to be onboard to make it a reality.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class pictures leaked

Speculation about the next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen centered on whether Daimler will switch to a new platform or not. Given the legendary stature of the G-Class, they cannot screw it up.A week earlier than the actual reveal date comes a bunch of leaked images that show off the all-new G-Class in all its glory.

Very few vehicles retain its original shape and design for decades and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of them. The new model carries the venerated boxy design of the Geländewagen albeit with a flurry of modern touches. The new model is believed to be no wider than the outgoing G-Class but exterior dimensions are yet to be confirmed. But smarter packaging of stuff has supposedly liberated more space inside the cramped SUV, although we don’t see how that is possible, since there was not extra space to play with in the first place.

And speaking of stuff, there must be a lot. Following the modern lines of Mercedes Benz, the new G-Class must be a tech-fest but we’ll have to wait till the official launch to know what’s in there.

The construction of the G-Class is going to follow the old-school ladder-type frame style. It will be complemented by three diff locks and a low-range gearbox to give it very capable legs off the tarmac. But that will be all from the well-aged formula and the rest are all modern. For instance, a new independent double wishbone suspension has been developed by Mercedes and AMG along with an updated rear axle. New engines will pop up in the engine bay but the details are not out as of now. But a V12 AMG model is not very likely to come back as Mercedes has mentioned before that the V12 will be reserved for Maybach models. Along with the new engines, a new nine-speed automatic transmission with a torque-converter is also being readied for the 2019 G-Class.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will reveal its face officially at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show where all the details about the new model will be made available.

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class redesign debuts

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, when it was released for the first time, was a groundbreaking product in terms of its design. It combined the practicality of a sedan and the swooping lines of a coupe in a stylish package that spawned the “four-door coupe” marketing term and several copycats. And now, two generations have passed by, so the time is ripe for an overhauled CLS. Enter the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, sporting new corporate styling cues that are at odds with the carryover shape of the car.

The new face of the CLS flaunts the latest corporate design language. The look has been honed to fit the eccentric four-door coupe identity of the CLS. The headlights are unlike anything that was seen on a Mercedes car, but will surely appear in the next-gen A-Class and other coupes as well. The rear is raked sharply to form the quintessential CLS look.
