So who do you go to if you’re in the market for a top-of-the-range midsize executive saloon; straight to BMW to have a look over their new 5 Series.
Obviously these dream scenarios are out of reach for many of us, but it illustrates how synonymous the brand and model is with a particular lifestyle and market segment. For some there is only one answer when these questions arise which has contributed to 7.9 million 5 Series sales till now and this week we found out why.
Launching in the UAE a few weeks ago the 5 Series always looks to set the benchmark in three key areas buyers of the car demand: efficiency, comfort and technology. Perhaps it is the technology upon which it prides itself most. And straight off the bat this car is like the star ship Enterprise when you get behind the wheel. It is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the vehicle. This offers support in traffic jams, slow-moving traffic, and long stretches of motorway. It’ll avoid other cars, keep you in your lane and just generally pilot things as much as you desire. In top specification the iDrive system displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. Not only is the car a WiFi hotspot, you can also use the optional Remote Parking system which allows it to be manoeuvred into tight parking spaces remotely using the car key. Real James Bond stuff.
Driving wise, you’re not going to going to find much better in this class. The version we tried was the 540i which has a 340hp engine and a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds. It was a magnificent machine and one we shan’t forget in a hurry.
