Get to Know More About The Porsche Panamera

The Panamera is one of the most iconic models in the luxury automobile world. When designing it, the manufacturer was aiming to create a spacious vehicle without compromising the style and elegance that Porsche cars are famous for.

This German luxury brand is renowned for its sports car masterpieces, specifically two-door sedans. A few years ago, the automaker expanded its horizons by creating its first large car with the Cayenne. A four-door SUV, it comes with more space and legroom than the typical sedan models. However, Porsche fans preferred a model with more room in the interior but not as big and bulky as the Cayenne. In order to bridge this gap, designers built the Panamera.

This model is Porsche’s first four-door and four-seat sedan. The initial model was unveiled during the 13th Auto Shanghai International Automobile Show in China in April 2009. In the following year, the automaker announced having produced more than 25,000 Panameras in just one year, delivered to its customers worldwide. Among the Panameras that came off the line, the 4S became the most famous among the existing six models.

This four-door full sedan measures 76 inches wide, 55.8 inches high and 195.7 long. It is powered by a 4.8 engine enabling it to display excellent operation, and employs a direct injection system that makes it throttle to an impressive sporty performance. What’s more, in just 5 seconds, the 4S can perform with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kmph. Not to mention, it also satisfies drivers’ need for speed with its maximum speed set at 285 kmph.

2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB showcased at the 2017 Dubai Motor Show

The eighth-gen Rolls-Royce Phantom features an evolutionary design and proportions largely carried over from its predecessor. On the outside, it has new Pantheon front grille reminiscent of the futuristic design seen on the grille of the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100, sleeker headlamps incorporating laserlight system with a range of over 600 metres, redesigned bumpers, tailpipes and boot lid and more contemporary tail lamps with LED lighting.

Inside too, changes are rather subtle in Rolls-Royce Phantom, so as to retain the familiar look. The analogue clock has moved to the inner end of the passenger-side dashboard. Perhaps the most evident change is the new 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster with LED backlighting that brings the Phantom on par with other latest high-tech luxury cars. Of course, there are new seats offering more comfort, and the fixed rear centre console has incorporated a drinks cabinet that allows the owner to celebrate on the go.

The new generation Rolls-Royce Phantom is based on ‘The Architecture of Luxury’, an all-new aluminium spaceframe architecture that will underpin every future Rolls-Royce. 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB is 5,982 mm long, 2,018 mm wide and 1,656 mm tall. It has a 3,772 mm wheelbase. Under the hood, is a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 petrol engine producing 571 PS and 900 Nm of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the wheels. Rolls-Royce has added four-wheel steering system in the Phantom to improve its manoeuvrability.

The all-new Rolls-Royce Phantom’s deliveries internationally will commence in January 2018.

Inside the Factory Where Bentley Builds $1,000,000 Custom Vehicles

We visit the iconic Mulliner division, where your wildest dreams easily become reality

A WELL-HEELED GENTLEMAN greets you at the front door of the Bentley motors manufacturing facility in Crewe, England. There are dozens of buildings that comprise the sprawling facility, but this one houses a mini museum which doubles as the start of the factory tour. Your guide walks you through some of the early and iconic vehicles that W.O. Bentley created nearly one century ago. Here, pedigreed steel glistens under spotlights, impressive and imposing 4 ½ liters and the Blowers that rocketed the Bentley Boys to victory at Le Mans.

Around the corner from the race steeds, the likes of the Speed Six and the Continental Type R await, reminding you that “Bentley” and “opulence” have been entwined since the start. Today’s decadent vehicles are created just beyond the impressive exhibit, on the assembly floor. It’s perhaps the opposite of what you’d expect a car factory to be. It’s not loud, you’re not dodging showering welding sparks, and it’s so immaculately clean, the floors would be suitable for serving afternoon tea upon. (Not that Bentley would be so uncouth. Tea and finger sandwiches were fittingly served in a study drenched in fine leathers.) Bustling workers scurry about; the various assembly lines—handling the Mulsanne, the Flying Spur, the Continental and the newer SUV, the Bentayga—are jam-packed. Sales have been strong and there’s no shortage of work waiting.

The lads are busy, but they’re not frenetic. Hand-assembling a luxury vehicle that costs more than a family home mustn’t be a rushed process. Future owners expect the exacting craftsmanship they’ve paid so dearly for. And Bentley does not disappoint when it comes to build quality. By example, a Mulsanne takes 400 hours to build, wholly by hand, with only five such vehicles being completed daily.

ALL BENTLEYS RECEIVE A leather-wrapped steering wheel, fully stitched by hand. Skilled tradesman train for countless hours to be able to adequately turn the stitches, working a needle and thread in each hand. I’m offered a go—on a practice wheel reserved for newbies—and after precise and careful instructions from the department leader, promptly screwed it up on the first pass. “Well, I’d send that back,” the manager smirks.

The best method for marking where the needles are to poke has been in place for decades: pressing a fork into the leather. “It’s easier to get the spacing even,” he says, twirling one. “We showed the Queen when she visited. She laughed.” My skeptical look fades when he produces a photo of Her Majesty, indeed smiling at a similar station to this very one.

Around the corner is the woodshop, housing massive sheets of oak, walnut, maple, chestnut and more in a humidity-controlled room. These veneer leafs come from sustainable trees, each able to be traced back to the root burrow from whence it came. Root burrows or burls are multi-thousand pound dense formations which are like gold to a woodworker. They produce far richer patterns on the veneers. They’re shaved thin, akin to a pencil in a sharpener, then two weeks of prep work begins. First, they’re scanned to be bookmatched, meaning the patterns are symmetrical and mirrored across the interior, they’re laser-cut, then treated to five coats of lacquer and three days of curing, followed by wax polishing by hand. Each panel gets this attention, requiring seven hours to complete. Some 30-plus panels comprise a typical Bentley.

Continuing through the plant, you arrive at hide and seat assembly. Bentley sources hides only from bulls that reside in higher European areas. Why, you wonder? “There are fewer mosquitos and insects at higher elevations, meaning fewer bites, thus fewer imperfections in the leather,” your guide replies. A massive scanner inspects the dyed hides, ensuring they are blemish-free, then they’re laser cut and passed along to the upholsterers who turn the supple raw materials into the plushest, most comfortable (massage-enabled) seats you’ll ever rest upon.

And so it continues, various exotic and beautiful raw materials being transformed into a remarkable finished product befitting the billionaires and heads of state for whom it is destined. The technical and logistical magic happens on the assembly floor, but there’s one building where you can speak your wishes and literally watch your dreams come true. Welcome to Mulliner.

WHEN W.O. BENTLEY ORIGINALLY launched, customers would purchase a chassis and the engine. What coach you affixed was your choice and business, though Bentley would recommend preferred bespoke coach builders who could furnish you a magnificently appointed cabin. One such provider was Mulliner. W.O himself had tapped Mulliner to create the bodywork for his EXP1 and as the years wore on, Mulliner and Bentley’s partnership burgeoned, and Mulliner became an official division of Bentley.

BMW Delivers Over 100,000 Electrified Vehicles in 2017

Love them or hate them, electrified vehicles aren’t going anywhere. BMW recently announced that it has delivered more than 100,000 fully electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids in 2017. That’s a lot of buzz.

For the record, Tesla expects to deliver at least that many Model S and X SUVs and around 260 Model 3 sedans for the year as well.

The German automaker reports that this total includes BMW i, BMW iPerformance, and Minis. Its current market share in EVs is over three times larger than its share of the traditional vehicle market in Germany.

The BMW i model line-up includes the all-electric i3 sedan and its plug-in hybrid sports cars i8 Coupe and new Roadster variant that goes on sale in 2018. A battery-electric Mini is planned for 2019, an electric version of the BMW X3 is expected in 2020, and the futuristic BMW iNEXT debuts in 2021.

The company claims it will offer 25 fully-electric or part-electric models by 2025 and foresees electrified vehicles to then make up between 15 and 25% of its global sales.

To celebrate its latest milestone, the company illuminated its Munich “Four-Cylinder” headquarters tower to light up like a giant battery pack.

“We deliver on our promises… Selling 100,000 electrified cars in one year is an important milestone, but this is just the beginning for us,” said Harald Krüger, BMW Chairman of the Board of Management, in a statement.

“Since the introduction of the BMW i3 2013, we’ve delivered over 200,000 electrified cars to our customers and by 2025, we will offer 25 electrified models to our customers. Our early focus on electro-mobility has made this success possible—and electro-mobility will continue to be my measure for our future success.”

Audi Sport’s Near Future

In 2018 and beyond, the Ingolstadt power brokers will further expand the Audi Sport range and bring the division up to speed.

From what we know today, there will be no replacement for the slow-selling R8, which will be phased out in 2020 when the new Lamborghini Huracán arrives. Also dead: the proposed zero-emission R8 e-tron and the Scorpion supercar powered by a 1,000-hp V-8 boasting a desmodromic valvetrain created from four 1.2-liter Ducati motorcycle engines. But over the next two or three years, expect to see business as usual from Audi Sport. We have just seen the new rear-wheel-drive R8, and we won’t have to wait long for the next-generation S/RS6, S/RS7, and S8.

The forthcoming RS4 and RS5 use a new 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 that makes 450 hp. Although this is a brand-new engine, 470 hp appears to be its maximum potential. A PHEV edition throws in an 85 kW e-motor for good measure, but at this point it is not scheduled for the RS models. As far as the RS6 and RS7 are concerned, Audi will stick with the ubiquitous 4.0-liter V-8 that covers a wide 500- to 650-hp bracket. So far, there is no sportyV-8 hybrid in the works.

At the top of the lineup will be the RS Q8 (2020), which shares its 650-hp V-8 with the Lamborghini Urus.  The Q8 is a sleeker coupe derivative of the chunky Q7. Last but not least, Audi has a surprise up its sleeve in the shape of project J1. Porsche originally chose the J1 moniker for the all-electric Mission E (see page 56) due in early 2019. Audi later that year intends to add its own version of the smog-free full-size four-door coupe. Think of it as a five-seater Audi Quattro, and you’re almost there. Although Audi Sport will handle its part of the joint venture, the engineering concept is already frozen. The key differentiators will then be—within reason—a redesigned body and an interior unique to the brand.

Mercedes to Electrify Its Car Lineup by 2022

German automaker Mercedes-Benz is the latest car manufacturer to join the electrification trend with its recent announcement to electrify its entire vehicle lineup by 2022. More and more automakers are making these announcements for the past few years, particularly now that China, the leading car market in the world, has announced plans to ultimately ban the sale of fossil fuel vehicles.

According to Mercedes-Benz chief Dieter Zetsche, the renowned automaker will offer either fully electric or hybrid versions of its vehicles by 2022, adding up to a minimum of 50 new electric model options by that time. Meanwhile, Smart, another Daimler-owned subsidiary, will reportedly go fully electric by 2020.

This puts Mercedes in great company with other high-profile automakers, including Swedish company Volvo, which have pledged to offer a fully electrified lineup by 2019, and Ford’s Lincoln luxury sub-brand has set 2020 as the deadline for launching electric variants of each of its vehicle models.

Have you always dreamed of owning a Mercedes-Benz in Dubai? By simply choosing the best car showroom in Dubai, you will get a chance to check out a number of premium cars and affordable luxury car brands. To save much on your purchase, you can go for a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz in Dubai. Just wait until the electrified versions become available.

Among the characteristics that set the A3 apart from other models is its fine handling, durable build quality and the availability of 4WD on some editions.

Performance

Touted as the best companion for urban drives, the A3 offers you with a choice of nine engines that cover both petrol and diesel and range from the 1.6L FSI turbo model to the 3.2L V6 found in the Quattro model. What’s truly impressive is that the 140bhp 2L TDI S tronic A3 Sportback attains 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 129mph.

Get Driving Lessons on Luxury Vehicles in Dubai

As part of the Emirates Driving Institute’s (EDI) platinum course, aspiring drivers in Dubai can now enjoy taking their driving lessons on a Range Rover Vogue and a Mercedes G500.

Unveiled with the two vehicles worth around AED1 million, the course has quickly generated a lot of interest.

Following the debut of the course at the EDI’s head office,  Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency, told Gulf News that there is a huge demand for this service, which serves learners from a specific segment of the society, who would ultimately go on to drive luxury cars.

He revealed that he has felt the need for such a service for sometime now because a lot of youngsters go on to drive huge luxury and sports cars right away after getting the license but in reality, they are not ready to handle powerful cars because they are trained in smaller cars. “This course actually prepares them to drive big luxury cars right from the outset.”

Behroozian added that the course provides greater focus to the luxury and convenience of the trainees, but it doesn’t compromise on the quality of training. He noted that just because they make certain formalities easier for the trainees doesn’t mean they would make the training easy. “We have made sure that the compliance with the regulations is absolute. There is no chance of the applicants passing until they are safe and skillful drivers.”

Electric Car Production at Volkswagen

“Dying is easy. Comedy is hard,” according to an old adage. Something else that’s hard is managing the supply chain needed to build an automobile, and that applies to an electric car just as much as it does a conventional one. Tesla is the latest to find that out, as it struggles to get production of its midsize Model 3 into high gear.

Volkswagen is embarking on an important next stage toward electric vehicle mass production as well, declaring today that it’s 100 weeks out from production of its first from-the-ground-up Volkswagen I.D. electric car (the car in the middle in the picture below).

volkswagen dubai price

Volkswagen is committed to beginning production of its new I.D. sub-brand of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in late 2019, but in order for that process to go smoothly, it needs to begin managing the supply chain for those vehicles now, 100 weeks before the assembly line for its new cars begins operations.

The electrified offerings from the world’s largest carmaker will all be built on a new chassis architecture designated the MEB toolkit. Manufacturers go to great lengths to spread the costs of production across as many units as possible in order to increase their return on investment. The cars may look quite different on the outside, but underneath they share the same attachment points for suspension pieces and battery packs. Even such things as the size and location of ventilation ducts needs to be standardized.

According to a December 1 press release from Volkswagen, “The toolkit includes electric motors with different power ratings, flat batteries in the floorpan with innovative technologies and software features such as smart lighting and head-up displays with augmented reality which were previously only available on premium segment vehicles.”
